What you'll get

To kill and prevent fleas, pet parents need many tools in their toolbox. We’ve included everything you need to keep your pets safe and protected all year round.

Every starter kit includes:

  • A flea comb

  • Degreasing soap

  • 3 months of flea and tick treatment

  • Household spray

  • Treats

Tips for use

Treating your pack for fleas is only one step in the flea and tick prevention process. Use every tool in your toolbox for ultimate flea control.

  • Flea comb: Flea combs are a great tool to use when removing fleas from your pet’s coat and parting their fur to apply topical treatment to their skin. When removing fleas, dip the flea comb in warm, soapy water in between strokes. This will remove the fleas from the comb to keep your cat from getting reinfested.

  • Degreasing soap: This type of soap is the best way to suffocate adult fleas and remove flea dirt from your pet’s coat. We recommend waiting at least 24-48 hours before AND after applying flea treatment to bathe your pet. This will work better than a mild pet shampoo, but should not be used as a long-term solution. You can also use it to remove other topical flea and tick products like collars and squeeze-ons before applying ours.

  • Topical treatments: Topical flea and tick treatment is the best for killing and preventing fleas. We recommend consulting your veterinarian before using this product to make sure it's the right fit for your cat. Be sure to apply your cat's flea treatment at the same time every 30 days. Also, make sure every cat (and dog) is protected to avoid re-infestation. Always follow the instructions on the box and keep dogs and cats separate after treatment (permethrin is toxic to cats).

  • Household spray: Our flea spray for the home helps keep fleas, ticks, ants, and cockroaches out of your home. It stops the flea life cycle so flea eggs and larvae don't become a bigger problem for your pets. Spray every 14 days in your home on baseboards, carpets, underneath furniture, and your pet’s belongings. It covers up to 2,000 square feet and prevents bugs in the home for up to 7 months.

  • Treats: Every cat deserves a treat, especially after dealing with fleas. Use our crunchy Bug Bites treats to help you apply topical treatment, practice tricks, or simply reward your favorite feline.

What do you do if you still have fleas?

It can take up to 90 days to eliminate fleas. Follow these recommendations if you are having trouble getting rid of your flea problem:

  • Protect every pet with monthly flea medications (even if they live indoors)

  • Vacuum carpets, floors, and underneath furniture regularly

  • Wash your pet’s bedding, blankets, and toys often

  • Have your home and yard treated with pet-friendly insecticide

  • Consult with your veterinarian if your pet gets reinfected

How do I continue preventing fleas?

Year-round prevention is key to keep fleas, ticks, and lice from reinfesting your pets and home. Consider a subscription such as PetFriendly to get your pet's flea and tick prevention delivered to your door at the same time every month.

Also, make sure every cat and dog is treated in your home. If your pack interacts with unprotected animals (tame or wild), they can risk getting reinfected.

What diseases can an animal get from fleas or tick bites?

Aside from skin irritation from fleas biting your pet — fleas and ticks carry many diseases that can negatively impact their health. But, most diseases are preventable with monthly flea and tick protection.

Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a very common tick-borne disease carried by blacklegged ticks.

Flea allergy dermatitis

While it isn't something a flea carries, dogs and cats can get flea allergy dermatitis — a common skin infection that happens when animals are allergic to fleas and their saliva.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne illness. An infectious bacteria called Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes RMSF, transmits through both nymph and adult American dog and brown dog ticks.

What types of flea and tick prevention products are out there?

Many products on the market help kill and prevent fleas. The most common flea and tick products are:

  • Flea collars

  • Flea sprays

  • Spot-on treatments

  • Oral medications

  • Injections

Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best fit for the health of your pack.
